Yummy yum cha!
My only yum cha experience to date was at Sun World in Auckland about 5 years ago - the restaurant was as big as a small warehouse, stacked with diners (mostly Chinese) and the waitstaff orbited constantly around the tables for a few hours with trolleys of delicious dim sum. It was a fantastic meal, and I've wanted to have yum cha again for ages. So when my friend Louise suggested yum cha at Golden Harvest for lunch on Saturday I readily agreed - I hadn't realise that it was offered by any restaurants in Dunedin. The Golden Harvest sits in an arcade close to McDonalds on George St, and although they have a billboard on the street, you'd be forgiven for missing it. We were greeted at the door of the restaurant by one of the friendly waitstaff and escorted to a table, where a list of the available dim sum waited for our inspection. Louise is an old hand at yum cha, so I mostly left the choice of what to eat up to her, but some of the selections sounded wonderful. I was also impressed to see that they had dishes that I consider "real" Chinese food, like congee (meat porridge) and chicken feet. A pot of hot green tea was brought to the table - I waited for a while before pouring mine, as I like it nice and strong. Louise and I are on the same page in that we both dislike green tea by itself, but with Chinese food it is sublime. Then the dim sum arrived. The one thing I had to choose for myself was BBQ pork rolls, which are one of my most favourite things. They were brought out in their steamer, luscious puffy dough containing sweet pork filling. We also had pork and bok choy dumplings, which reminded me a lot of the Japanese gyosa; an intriguing turnip and Chinese sausage slice which tasted a little like a spicy potato cake; succulent Chinese greens in soy sauce; and deep fried squid. I think the squid might have been coated in cornmeal, as the pieces were bright yellow, but they were crisp and tender and delicious. We ended our meal satiated but not stuffed full - exactly as you want to be at lunchtime! I highly recommend the Golden Harvest's yum cha, and I look forward to having another meal there soon. - Lhizz , posted 06/27/06
